Seeds are hailed as some of the most nutrient dense foods we can add to our diet pretty easily. They provide an abundance of proteins, fats, minerals and fibre packed into a tiny little energy packed seed.

Just remember that seeds are the start of a new plant, a new tree will grow out of the tiniest of seeds. Seeds provide the growing seedling with all the energy it requires until it is large enough to make its own energy through photosynthesis. We should be eating these powerhouses to harvest some of their awesome energy.

Below is a list of the most widely available and nutritious seeds you can purchase commonly in Ireland.

 

The more widely known seeds are Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Sesame Seeds and Flax Seeds. They are all high in protein, fibre, minerals (e.g. zinc and calcium) but also in essential fatty acids. They will add nutrition to any meal and are best eaten sprinkled over salads, ground up mixed into yoghurt or as a snack on their own. They can be added to delicious flapjacks as well.

Flax Seeds in particular have wonderfully healing properties on the digestive system. They will help regulate bowel movements and nourish the gut. To help relieve constipation they are best eaten in the morning such as a tablespoon full in a pot of yoghurt. Chew them well as they will not be broken down by the digestive system otherwise. And drink at least one large glass of water with them.

Chia Seeds are nutritionally similar to Flax Seeds, but a lot more versatile. You can find yummy dessert recipes using Chia Seeds in Susan Jane White’s or Derbhla O’Rourke’s cookbooks and many others. You can also make delicious porridge from Chia Seeds, or simply add them to a homemade smoothie.
